New Providence

New Providence is a small town that is close to NYC and that has a lot of character and amenities with the convenience of top rated schools, shopping, gym, restaurants and great community and recreational facilities.

New Providence is a small town with a population of about 12,000 residences.  There is a real sense of community with friendly, familiar faces around you. It is in Union County and is bordered by Chatham, Berkeley Heights and Summit.  Home values have historically been strong but was boosted by the implementation of the mid-town direct train line.  In addition, sales have been boosted by New Providence Schools being rated as one of the top in the state.  Much of the unincorporated area of Murray Hill lies in New Providence, with the remainder in Berkeley Heights.  It is also home to Murray Hill Square, a reproduction village of reminiscent of Williamsburg, VA that was originally built as an old time village with shops and its own school but was converted into townhouses and condos.

Landscape

New Providence is located in the Watchung Mountains.  As a result, neighborhoods and land can vary from area to area.  Some neighborhoods have a 'hilly' feel while others are flat.  Driving around, you will see neighborhoods connected by sidewalks and other neighborhoods with a slightly more rural feel.  You can find a variety of homes including colonials, ranches, splits, bi-levels, townhouses and condos.  In addition, the town is home to several apartment complexes.

Schools

The New Providence School District serves students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. Schools in the district are Allen W. Roberts Elementary School (grades K-6), Salt Brook Elementary School (K-6), New Providence Middle School (7&8) and New Providence High School (9-12). The middle school and high school share the same building and some of the same facilities (art rooms, auditorium, east wing, west wing, gyms, music rooms, TV production room, cafeteria).

Transportation

Service on the New Jersey Transit Gladstone Branch of the Morris & Essex Lines is available at the New Providence and Murray Hill stations, offering service to Hoboken Terminal and to Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan. These trains connect at Summit or Newark Broad Street with Manhattan-bound trains.  Parking at the train stations is available to New Providence residents at an additional charge.  Non-resident parking is also available.

Lakeland Bus Lines offers weekday rush hour service from stops along Springfield Avenue to New York's Port Authority Bus Terminal.

In addition, there is access to Rte 78.  The Garden State Parkway, NJ Turnpike and Rte 287 are within close proximity.  Off peak drive time is approximately 40 minutes to NYC and approximately 1 1/2 hours to Philadelphia.  Major airports are Newark International Airport (under 20 miles), John F. Kennedy International Airport (approx. 50 miles).

What To Do

NYC is a popular destination for day trips but best part of New Providence is its central location to everything NJ has to offer while also offering access to open space.

There are several Borough-owned parks including Veterans Memorial Park on South Street, Lyons Park on Livingston Avenue, and Clearwater Park near the end of Central Avenue.

The downtown has recently gone through a transformation which has attracted great places to eat.  There is Starbucks, Chipotle, Chopt, Dunkin Donuts, Smashburger, home of the great Prestige Diner and a brewery that recently opened.
